Clowns are the ultimate high priests and sages and highest value people we have - the lack of respect they get for their art is one of my regular gripes.
My only note here is that Get Hard came out in 2015, and I thought it was funny. That might have actually been the last actually funny comedy movie in ten years though.
I have tix to see Shane Gillis in a couple weeks and holy god were they expensive. Cancelation from the mainstream just gave all the greats the last laugh, because Louis, Hannigan, etc. just all sell direct now and capture all the profit, with no reduction in their audience. Back in the pre-2015 era I used to see comedy all the time and rarely paid more than $70...two middling seats for Gillis is now $500 all-in.
Holy smokes- you’re right! Get Hard ruled. The strobe light scene made me cry. Good call out.
The great thing about standup… it’s better in dingy clubs. Roll the dice for $25 on a random guy you’ve never heard of. In fact, the comedy cellar in NYC remains the cheapest date in manhattan. So long as you don’t care who’s in the line up.
I remember that movie in particular and what year it was bc I watched it on a plane and actually had tears and was choking laughing. The elevation might've made it a bit funnier, but I remember trying to tamp myself down on the plane.
Yep random killer sets at a $25 club where you don't know who you'll see have been some of my favs. Though my top/most impressive comedy experience was Bill Burr at an outdoor venue and very politically and age-mixed audience. Outdoor comedy is rough, without the tight space and ceiling to bounce the laughs and amplify the vibe. His opening acts fully bombed. So seeing him just utterly dominate the crowd and play them like a maestro, under open sky and not losing their interest for even 2 seconds, sending everyone scream laughing..utterly sublime.
This was the first article from this substack I stumbled upon and immediately upon finishing I was compelled to subscribe.
I prayed for the lord to send me an angel! We won’t let you down! Check out the archives for some fun stuff
Let’s not forget Cumtown, which is Stav’s origin story.
Nick Mullen’s blog was so fun too
